- Hello,
-
- I'm looking to buy a 28.8. Does latency vary much from model to model? I
- want the lowest latency spec I can find. Actually, I just want to be sure
- the one I buy isn't some fluke model that happens to have an unusually
- high latency. I'm not going to worry if Brand A is 10ms faster than Brand B.
- But if Brand C is 30ms slower, I'll take Brands A or B. (Yes, I'm pulling
- these numbers out of a hat, but I hope you get the idea.)
-
- Is that specification available for modems? Can it be determined from any
- of the specs that usually ARE listed for modems?
-
- Is this a reasonable test for finding what a modem's latency is:
-
- I log on to my ISP. I ping an arbitrary host, let it run for a while,
- then get the average.
-
- Then I call my ISP and start up SLIP (or PPP) and ping that same host,
- this time from my machine at home.
-
- If I take the difference between these two averages, is that roughly what
- the latency of my modem is?
-
- I know other factors will influence ping times. But I'm willing to run
- this test several times at different hours of the day. Typically, I'll
- have 30 days to make my decision. ;)
-
- Any guidance will be much appreciated.
-
- Jack
